Your hips are all about direction. If there’s somewhere you want to go, your hips will get you there. The question is, where do you want to go? Toward the park? Away from work? Running from the past? Ambling around the present?
First, we must answer: What are your hips?
Your hips are two, large joints of the lower extremities, formed by the femur (thigh bone) and pelvis. Look at the picture (lower right) to see that these joints are sturdy. Very sturdy, with the head of the femur fitting snuggly into the socket of the pelvis (acetabulum), to create a picture-perfect ball-and-socket joint.
These two, coxal joints have to be sturdy because they carry the entire weight of your body above, including: back, neck, head, upper extremities, and many many organs. They carry this weight (e.g. you) via a wide range of movements available at the joint: flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation. Movements that facilitate walking, running, sitting, and every other action involving your thighs.
